Okay, so I know it’s September and not exactly springtime anymore. So why am I giving away this bright floral Kizmos Flora kitchen tool set now? Great question!

Because Winter is Coming, friends.

Being from Arizona, I never though of winter as a particularly dark and gloomy time of year (when its 65 and sunny out from November to March, how could it be??). But then I moved to Boston. Winter here–and in lots of places other than Arizona and maybe Florida–is a tad dark and gloomy most days, and by the end of it you’d just about kill to see a flower again.

So when the folks at Kizmos asked if I wanted to try out their Flora kitchen tool set, it got me thinking: What a perfect way to not only get me through the loads of holiday baking I plan to do this year, but also brighten up my kitchen during those gloomy winter months!

My kitchen set came in the mail a couple weeks ago and I’ve since had a chance to play with it. Here are a few of my favorite pieces:

I’m a big sucker for these measuring cups and measuring spoons. I know that seems like a weird thing to be obsessed with, but being a type 1 diabetic, I constantly have to measure out my food and am therefore constantly digging through my drawer of measuring cups looking for the one I need. The bright colors are not only fun, but also make grabbing the right cup the first time a breeze: 1 cup is yellow, 1 Tablespoon is pink. Easy as that! The plastic cups are dishwasher safe, too.

The whisk! This one is another of my favorites because of the little butterfly trapped inside. I thought that was a cute touch! :)

This set also comes with some cute nesting floral cookie cutters, which are perfect for homemade roll-out cookie dough. Delish! If you’re not a cookie person, however, these are also excellent for cutting gelatin and play dough shapes or even stenciling.

Perhaps my favorite pieces of this set, however, is the nylon tool set and crock. This thing is adorable. The crock is ceramic and the set is designed to look like flowers in a vase. How cute is that, am I right? The “bouquet” of kitchen tools are made of heat resistant nylon and are dishwasher safe. The set comes with a turner, slotted spoon, basting spoon, ladle and spatula, all in the shape of a different flower. The matching mixing bowl set pairs nicely with this tool set as well. The set of three mixing bowls are all dishwasher safe and are perfect for mixing batters, cookie dough, and sauces. One end of the bowl is even has a floral-inspired spout to make for easy pouring!

THE RECIPE: Blueberry Almond Coffee CAke

Before we get to the giveaway, however, I thought I would share with you one of my favorite dessert recipes of all time: blueberry almond coffee cake! This way, if you win the kitchen tool set you’ll have a new recipe to try out using your prize :)

Blueberry Almond Coffee Cake

To be fair, I cannot take full credit for this recipe; it has been adapted from a Cooking Light recipe that came out, oh, circa 2001? (If I had to guess). My mom stumbled upon this recipe in a magazine ages ago and it just so happens to be–besides chocolate chip cookies–the very first thing I learned how to bake all-by-myself growing up! Here’s what you need:

• 1 cup all-purpose flour
• 1/2 cup granulated sugar
• 3/4 tsp. baking powder
• 1/2 tsp. salt
• 1/4 tsp. baking soda
• 1 cup fresh blueberries
• 2/3 cup  low fat buttermilk
• 2 Tbsp. butter, melted
• 1 tsp. vanilla extract
• 1/4 tsp. almond extract
• 1 large egg
• cooking spray
• 1/4 cup sliced almonds (optional–I almost never add them)
• 1 Tbsp. brown sugar
• 1/4 tsp cinnamon

This blueberry almond coffee cake makes for a tasty sweet breakfast treat or after-dinner coffee companion and is topped with cinnamon sugar

THE DIRECTIONS

Preheat your oven to 350 F. Combine flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and baking soda in a large bowl. Add 1 cup blueberries (or less–I usually put in closer to 3/4 cup) to your flour mixture and toss well. Combine buttermilk, butter, almond and vanilla extract and 1 egg and stir well. From here, add your flour and stir just until the flour is mixed in–do not stir past this point. Pour your batter into a greased 8″ square baking pan. Top your batter with a mixture of 1 Tbsp. brown sugar and 1/4 tsp. cinnamon (and slivered almonds if so desired–I usually omit the added almond slices since I don’t particularly like the extra crunch when I’m eating a deliciously soft cake, but I’m sure that’s just me!). Bake at 350 for about 30 minutes OR until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
