Learn how to make your own homemade headache salve with this easy tutorial featuring Infinity Jars! All you need is four ingredients!

My husband is one smart, hard working cookie. Lately he’s been working 14+ hour days and weekends to support our family. I honestly don’t even know how he does it.

I visited his office once and found his desk covered in several inch tall tomes and littered with a smattering of legal documents. Fortunately he enjoys his work and it allows for me to stay home with Little Bo (something for which I am extremely grateful), but there is one unfortunate side effect: Headaches.

Alas, staring at a computer screen all day leaves him with sore eyes and a pounding head. Unfortunately this is something he’s been dealing with since long before legal work, and he gets headaches like this often enough that he doesn’t like taking Tylenol every time it happens.

He’s going to see the doctor about it just in case, but I wanted to see if I could find him some relief in the meantime. Now that we are on our way to living more naturally, I looked up the properties of some essential oils for headache remedies and was planning to put together some kind of salve for him.

So when the lovely folks over at Infinity Jars contacted me to see if I wanted to try some of their ultraviolet filtering glass jars and containers, I figured they would work perfectly for this headache salve project!

But before I get into the recipe, I want to share with you a bit more about these spiffy jars. We’ve been trying to switch from plastics to glass in our house for the last couple weeks. It’s been a slow transition, but we now store all of our flours, sugars, oats, leftovers, and prepped food (think washed and cleaned fruit) in glass containers (mostly Pyrex type stuff). I’ve been looking for a glass hand soap dispenser for the bathrooms (the metal kind rust!) and am always on the lookout for cosmetic style containers for my DIY body care projects.

Infinity Jars sent me four different reusable glass jars to test out:

SCIENCE!

What’s really cool about these jars is the science behind them. Unlike traditional clear or amber glass jars, these jars actually slow down the decaying process of organic matter.

These jars are super dark, so they block out visible light rays (which degrade organic matter) while allowing in infrared and UV-A rays, which help preserve the shelf life of what’s inside. Pretty neat, huh?

These jars are black, but if you carefully look through them you’ll see just a hint of the deep violet tint they have if you look closely enough. I tried to capture this with my camera, but the jars do such a good job filtering out light I couldn’t get a picture! This was the best I could do:

In addition to the ultra-violet filtering, every glass container in their collection is guaranteed to have an airtight seal and to be scent proof. This is perfect if you want to use their containers for storing dried herbs, teas, flour, cooking oils, vinegars, herbal tinctures, homemade cosmetics–whatever you want to preserve! This preservation factor is especially great for DIY body care projects since the ones I make don’t contain preservatives.

I have some plans for my soap dispenser and slow pour bottle (stay tuned!), but for now I’ll show you how to use the 50mL cosmetic jar to make some awesome, natural headache and stress relief salve.

YOU WILL NEED:

DIRECTIONS:

Step 1. In a double boiler, melt down your beeswax. If you don’t have a double boiler, you can easily make one! Get yourself a small sauce pan and a glass or metal bowl (I prefer glass). The bowl will be sitting on top of the sauce pan. Fill the sauce pan up with maybe an inch of water or so–just enough to gently boil but not so much that the water touches the bottom of your bowl. And voila! You just made yourself a double boiler!

Note: You don’t have to use beeswax if you don’t have any. You can simply replace the beeswax with more coconut oil and omit the almond oil. However, coconut oil melts at around 76-77 degrees F, and we live in Arizona. ‘Nuff said. So I added beeswax to this recipe to make this salve a little more firm so it can withstand slightly warmer temperatures.

Step 2. Measure out your coconut oil and almond oil (or grape seed or jojoba–jojoba has the longest shelf life) and add it to the melted beeswax, allowing the coconut oil to melt completely. Also add your essential oils.

Step 3. Pour your mixture into your 50mL container and allow it to cool completely.

To use your salve, gently press onto it so that it softens a bit under your fingers and apply it to the temples (being sure to steer clear of the eyes), back of neck and forehead. Spearmint/peppermint and eucalyptus essential oils are excellent stress relievers in addition to being useful in clearing headaches, so feel free to use this salve any time you just want to relax!
