They’re super easy to make and are perfect for a table-scape with a rustic feel to it. I loved these (and burlap) so much I plan to use them all year round :) Here’s what you need to do to throw these babies together:

Step 1. Measure off roughly 15″ of burlap ribbon. Depending on the size of your cutlery, you may want to adjust the length of ribbon to accommodate larger or smaller utensils.  Using burlap ribbon makes this project easy, since the edges of the ribbon have already been sewn off for you, preventing the burlap from doing what it loves doing best: unraveling!

Step 2. Fold over the bottom edge of your burlap a half-inch.

Step 3. At this point, I got out my embroidery floss (which is a weird name, I think–I just call it “thread”) and do a blanket stitch (<–how to video). A blanket stick is a decorative stitch that is used to reinforce the edge of thick materials. Before making these, I had no idea what a blanket stitch was and had never done one before, but it is pretty easy to figure out!

I like the more rustic look of a hand-sewn edge (don’t worry if your stitching isn’t perfect–mine sure wasn’t!), but you can also simply hot glue this edge down if you’re short on time or don’t want to mess with stitching. Here is what the back of the burlap looks like one it has been stitched down:

Step 4. Fold over your burlap, with the edge you just stitched/hot glued facing you, as shown below:

From here, you will need to either stitch or hot glue down the edges of the burlap to the right and left of the utensils above.

You will also need to fold the top edge of your utensil holder back a half-inch, and either stitch or hot glue it down, as shown below:

Step 5. Use your Silhouette (or exacto knife) to cut out a design for your burlap! I decided to go with “Give Thanks” since it felt perfect for fall but could also be fitting during the holidays and even year-round. I cut my design out of vinyl since it has a sticky backing, will lay flat on the burlap, and can be reused to decorate more than one utensil holder.

Step 6. Bust out your paint! I used a cream colored acrylic paint, although any color acrylic paint would do. When you’re painting you will want to go slowly and paint in more of a “dabbing” than “swiping” motion. You will also want to place a sheet of paper into your burlap holder to prevent the paint from bleeding through, given the porous nature of burlap.

Step 7. Remove your burlap and marvel at your cute, hand-made utensil holder!
