So about a year ago I stumbled across a lovely tutorial by my pal Lauren on how to make a wedding invitation ornament that I thought looked very classy and easy to make. I’ve been wanting to make one ever since, but haven’t had a chance. Last year we planned to spend Christmas in Phoenix with our families. I thought it would be depressing to come home to a cheerful holiday home in January only to have to take it all the Christmas stuff down, so I just didn’t put any up.

This year, however, we will be having a white Christmas here in Boston. Although a big part of me is sad to not be spending the holiday at home, there is another part of me that is actually really excited for a Christmas with just my husband. We’ve never had a Christmas alone together, much less one enveloped in actual snow, and chances are after this year we never will get the opportunity again. So I’m going to enjoy this one!

Since this is our first married-but-away-from-family Christmas, I had to do something about decorations. A quick trip to Michaels and one 4-foot tree later, and we’re in business! I was fresh out of wedding invitations, but I figured it would be a cute idea to make a keepsake ornament filled with memorable moments from the year.

I began by typing up a list of things we did this year — spending Thanksgiving in New York, The Mr. finishing his first year of law school, celebrating our second wedding anniversary, beginning a blog here at Essentially Eclectic — to name a few. I printed these items on ivory colored resume paper, since I like the color and the paper is stiffer than printer paper {although printer paper would work too}.

I then sliced each item in the list with a paper slicer…

…before rolling each sliver of paper around a pen to make it curl.

I had purchased a package of clear glass ornaments at Michael’s for a few bucks, and it was in one of these that I put the rolled up slices of paper.

I also made sure to include a line in there that included our names and the year, so if I ever make another one of these, I would know what year this ornament was made at a glance.

Santa is bringing a Silhouette Cameo this year {thank you Santa} but it hasn’t come yet; if it had, I would’ve tried my hand at etching the year into the glass or perhaps using vinyl lettering instead? Next year…
