Blogging Goals for 2016

Happy 2016! It’s a new year! Time for new beginnings and to look ahead on what’s to come. For one, this weekend makes me 36 weeks pregnant! The time is flying by and baby could (theoretically) be here any day, so I’ve spent the last few weeks mapping out some things I’ve got to do before her arrival. So while I’m busy planning for the future, I thought I’d also map out some things I’d like to happen with my blog this next year as well! Here are some things I hope to accomplish:

Hobby blog? Business? I’ve been straddling that line for a while now. I began 2015 fully intending to take my blog to the next level and let it be a little part-time job on the side, but once I got pregnant my motivation went completely down the drain. I even considered shutting the blog down altogether! That’s not the first time I’ve felt nothing toward the blog, so I decided to wait it out and see if the feeling stuck. Historically it never has, and once again here I am! I will be a SAHM this year after Baby Girl is born, so I don’t know how much free time I’ll really have, but I hope to more clearly define the direction of my blog as far as hobby vs. business in the coming months.

This is something I’ve really struggled with. I have a digital blog planner that I’ve used in the past. It’s a document set up in Google Drive so that I can access it anywhere from my phone if need be. Historically, I’ve liked digital planners because with working full-time, I often found I didn’t have the time I’d need to finish a project by my projected date. A digital planner seemed the obvious choice for someone who can’t stand to see things scratched-out or whited-out on a page, but I think it might also be enabling my procrastination. So this year I’m on the prowl for the perfect blog planner, and perhaps if I can’t find one, I’ll make one!

One of the sheets on my digital blog planner, as it stands now…NEEDS HELP!

In previous years I’ve done some crafty blogging and recipe posts, but I’ve come to realize these things aren’t really my passion. I think I’ll still do them on occasion (especially the soap posts, because you know I love those!), but I want to break into topics I’ve only touched on before, like how-to posts on starting a blog and behind-the-scenes blog building and maintenance. I’m not an expert by any means, but I’ve taught myself enough to help others who are new to the blogging world. I also want to write more mommy posts. I’ll be having my first baby in just about three weeks time (omg) and that opens up such a wide array of fun post ideas! Plus I think it’s always interesting to hear another person’s take on child-rearing.

Hopefully this goal isn’t too far fetched, but I’d LOVE to open up an Etsy shop and sell some of the printables I’ve made. I have a few things available for sale now, like my recipe cards and love vouchers, but I’d love to explore the world of labels, gift tags, invites and other printables! I love designing these sorts of things and would like to learn more about how to make them better.

I used to religiously link up at link parties every day when I first started blogging. It was just about the only way my blog got traffic back then! I haven’t linked up in ages and a lot of the parties I used to link at aren’t even around anymore, so I’d like to get back to doing that. Not so much for traffic reasons, but to just get back in the spirit of sharing and exploring others’ creative endeavors. I used to have a nifty little schedule I’d follow, and I’d like to get back to that.

In that same vein, I need to reconnect with some old blog friends. I used to be a blog stalker, but in the last year, what with dealing with diabetes in pregnancy and full-time work, I haven’t kept in touch. I don’t know if you noticed, but I hardly posted AT ALL this year and as a result, have no idea what’s going on with some old online friends!

I am an Amazon Affiliate in case you didn’t know, and I really really heart Amazon. So it’s pretty cool that the blog is able to make a little money from Amazon Affiliate sales! But beyond being an Amazon Affiliate, I really don’t know much about affiliate marketing and would like to explore this topic a little deeper. Do other shops I love have affiliate programs? Which ones would be the best and most helpful for my readership? I have some research to do!

Now that we’ve moved back to Phoenix and we’re in a different apartment, I have MUCH better natural light to work with when it comes to taking photos. Our last apartment had windows that faced an alley and that were about 10 feet away from the building next to us. Good bright natural light was limited to the hours of 10am to about 2pm, and then only on the weekends since I worked full-time and it was often dark by the time I got home.

Since I have this great light to work with now, I really want to upgrade my camera. I purchased a bridge camera in 2013 that really bridged the gap (hence the name) between a point-and-shoot and a full-blown DSLR, which I really wasn’t ready for at the time. I’ve been itching to upgrade my camera for a while but haven’t really been able to justify the cost, not when my photos are decent enough and the only thing I’d be using the camera for is blog stuff. But now that there’s a baby on the way…let’s just say my subject matter got 1000x more interesting :)

I fancied that I would do this when I wrote My Blogger To WordPress Migration Story, but the idea fizzled out. You might notice that the link for that post includes a “part 1” on the end of the url, but no part 2 was ever made! I’ve never really done a true “series” on my blog, and I have a few ideas in this arena as far as what I’d like to write about.

I have REALLY struggled with this in the past. I’d get really gung-ho posting, post five or six times in a month, and then not post for three or four weeks–or months, like this year. This year I’m aiming for a bit more consistency. Maybe that means only one post a month. So be it. As long as I’m consistent!

What are your goals for this year?
