Last summer, my mom and dad bought me a NutriBullet. My dad was in the hospital 7 months ago with a stomach issue (since resolved); while he lay imprisoned in his hospital room (and while my sister was smuggling him contraband jello) he saw an infomercial for it and ordered one. They liked it so much that they had one shipped to me in Boston so that when my mom came to visit a month later, she could still make her smoothies! Also, I’ve never owned a blender, so it made sense.

I. Love. This thing. I never used to enjoy raw greens, so the idea of drinking them was not appealing at first. But with this, I can throw in spinach, toss in a banana, a carrot, half an apple, raspberries, almonds–whatever I have that’s blendable–mix it all up with a little water or milk, and BOOM! I have a smoothie laced with healthiness that doesn’t even taste like it.

The Mr. and I–and apparently all of Cambridge–decided to go to Star Market the day after new years to stock up on some real food after a week of binging on Christmas treats, and they were out of spinach. I had a bad experience with my alternative, Arugula, as a child so The Mr. suggested fruit smoothies until we had time to make another grocery store trek (and I really do mean “trek”). So the no-sugar-added banana apple smoothie was born!

THE RECIPE

  • 3/4 c. Milk
  • 2 ripe bananas
  • 1 apple
  • 1/4 cup slivered almonds
  • 1 Tbsp Chia seeds (optional)
  • 2 Tbsp ground flax seeds (optional–but must be ground)
  • Ice

To make this delicious smoothie, all you need to do are pop the above ingredients in your Nutri Bullet and give it a whirl! Before blending my ingredients, I use my EatSmart nutritional scale to calculate the carbohydrates of each ingredient in my drink. I always do this when I make smoothies since accurately counting carbs is critical when you’re a type 1 diabetic.

Fruit is high in natural sugars, so this drink doesn’t require extra sugar. I left the skin on the apples for extra fiber, added ground flaxseed (high in fiber and Omega-3 fatty acids–flaxseed must be ground so the body can absorb these nutrients), Chia seeds (high in calcium, Omega-3s, and antioxidants), and a handful of almonds (because they’re good for you and because why not?). Almond or soy milk can be easily substituted in place of regular milk should you desire to steer away from dairy.

This recipe makes approximately 24oz of smoothie, so The Mr. and I split it. Yum! I hope you enjoy it as much as we did :)
